Professional Sleepers

Cleveland Cavaliers’ forward LeBron James is a 13x All-Star, 11x All NBA First Team, USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year, 4x MVP, 3x NBA Finals MVP, 3x NBA Champion… well you get the point. LeBron has career averaged 27.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game. Most do not even come close to these career numbers, in fact most of us don’t have numbers in any of these categories. Though these stats are impressive, LeBron has another stat in which he is better than us… he sleeps 12 hours a night. Compared to the national average of 6.8 hours a night as reported by Gallup Poll 2013, LeBron almost sleeps double what the average person does. The same poll showed 40% of Americans sleep less than seven hours per day.

LeBron isn’t the only professional sleep either according to ESPN. Roger Federer also sleeps an average of 12 hours per night. Similarly, Usain Bolt, Steve Nash, Larry Fitzgerald, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova sleep upwards of 10 hours per night. These great athletes maintain their elite ability by properly recovering every night.

Adding to the list of greats, Tom Brady has a strict sleeping schedule as well. Brady gets to bed every night at 8:30 and when asked why, he said “Strength training and conditioning and how I really treat my body is important to me, because there’s really nothing else that I enjoy like playing football,” he said. “I want to do it as long as I can.” Brady noted he changed his habits significantly from the time he was 25 and has no regrets of before, but as he aged he noticed he has to take better care of his body to stay at an elite level. Brady is showing no signs of slowing down and he definitely has not slept walked through his career, but he has slept very well.
